What is the drug TYREUS®
TYREUS® contains the active ingredient nitizinone. TYREUS® is used to
treat a rare disease called hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 in adults,
adolescents and children (at any age).
With this disease, the body is unable to completely break down the amino
acid tyrosine (amino acids are the building blocks of our proteins), forming
harmful substances. These substances accumulate in the body. Nitisinone blocks
the breakdown of tyrosine and no harmful substances are formed.
For the treatment of hereditary tyrosinemia type 1, the patient must
follow a special diet while taking this medication, because tyrosine will
remain in the body. This special diet is based on a low content of tyrosine and
phenylalanine (another amino acid).
