What is the drug TERIFLUNOMIDE-CHEMRAR
TERIFLUNOMIDE-CHEMRAR is an immunomodulatory drug with anti-inflammatory properties that
selectively and reversibly inhibits the mitochondrial enzyme dihydroorotate
dehydrogenase (DGO-DH), which is necessary for the de novo synthesis of pyrimidine. Thus,
teriflunomide blocks the proliferation of stimulated lymphocytes, which require
de novo pyrimidine synthesis. The exact mechanism by which teriflunomide
exerts its therapeutic effect in multiple sclerosis (MS) is not fully
understood, but it may involve a decrease in the number of activated
lymphocytes in the central nervous system (CNS). It is possible that teriflunomide
reduces the number of peripheral activated lymphocytes that can migrate to the
central nervous system.
